You are going to make your way to Shangri-La on the Green, an idyllic little private campground on the Enumclaw-Franklin Road, between Cumberland and Black Diamond. It’s an hour’s drive from Seattle or SeaTac Airport, and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Word of Warning: Your cell phone will probably give up the ghost within 3-5 miles of the place. Reception is spotty around Black Diamond, and gets worse the further into the woods you drive, so either print these maps or commit them to memory. Do not count on being able to pull up these directions as you get closer. Plan ahead!

From the north (Seattle):

  • From I-5, traveling South, take exit 154A (left exit) to 405N toward Renton.
  • Take exit 4 to WA-169S/Maple Valley Hwy toward Maple Valley/Enumclaw.
  • After about 11 miles, you’ll come to “4 corners.” There’s a Fred Meyer to your left. This will be your last stop for major provisions (last minute tent, booze, etc.) Continue straight through the intersection toward Black Diamond.
  • After 7 miles, you’ll have arrived in Black Diamond. Turn left onto Lawson Street (just before the gas station). This is your absolute last stop for emergency provisions (gas, water, cigarettes).
  • This will wind out of civilization and turn into the Green River Gorge Road. Stay on it. After 4½ miles, you’ll come to a one-way bridge crossing the Green River.
  • STOP FOR THE RED LIGHT.
  • Continue on this road (it gets windy-er) for about another mile. You’ll see a driveway to your right that we’ve hopefully marked.
  • You have arrived at Shangri-La. Drive in and follow the signs to parking and campsites.

From the south (Portland and beyond):

  • For easy directions, take I-5 northbound to 405 and follow the directions above.

Or, to shave about 20 minutes off your trip:

  • From I-5N, take exit 142A onto WA-18 towards Auburn.
  • After 4.3 miles, take the WA-164E exit toward Enumclaw.
  • Turn left at the bottom of the ramp onto WA-164/Auburn-Enumclaw Hwy.
  • In 7.1 miles, turn left onto SE 400th St.
  • For the next 5.7 miles, marvel at the fact that one of these farms could be the very farm where a man died after having sex with a horse.
  • Turn left onto WA-169 at “Krain’s Korner”
  • In 0.9 miles, turn right onto the Enumclaw-Franklin Road.
  • Follow this road for exactly 3 miles. The entrance to Shangi-La will be on your left.
  • If you come to a one-way bridge, you’ve gone too far. Turn around and drive back about a mile in the direction you came from. Look for the entrance on your right.

From the immediate south (Enumclaw):

  • Head north on 169 towards Black Diamond
  • About a mile after Krain’s Korner, turn right onto the Enumclaw-Franklin Road.
  • The entrance is 3 miles down the road to your right.

From the east (Cumberland):

  • You are either Remy’s immediate family or you are traveling with them, and I’m sure you already know how to get there. See you soon!
